Do You Drink the Right Amount of Water?

You all know you should drink water. But have you ever thought what kind of water is best to drink? I mean, really good water that has real benefits for you?

I am sure many of you will find it unbelievable, that water - it’s water after all! - can do us harm. But it does. It turns out not all water is created equal.

As famous Russian medicinal doctor and nutrition guru Olga Butakova says: “None of us (doctors) will tell you the simplest thing about your health - water is life, but the wrong type of water is death!” Yikes! Stay tuned and find more about the types of water in a future post.

Today I will clarify the amount of water you should be drinking per day and how to intake it.


While we all know that we have to drink enough, no one is actually sure what enough is. Even doctors are constantly arguing about the right amount a person should consume.

We have all seen those ads about 8 glasses of water, however following that advice might leave you dehydrated in a matter of days. Or could lead to feeling guilty for not meeting the standards. I just do not like to be bullied into doing things I do not feel are right for me.

That's why I like following the Ayurvedic science. It focuses on YOU and what feels right, by only giving simple guidelines to test out for yourself. These guidelines can be followed by everyone and it requires just a little bit of awareness to change your life for good.

The rule of 2 gallons of water daily doesn’t hold true for everyone.

Just like with nutrition, Ayurveda recognizes that we are all different where our lifestyles, diets and energy expenditure is concerned. So it is with water as well but the golden rule is about 300 ml per kg body mass.

Eat your water, don’t drink it.

Actually gulping cold water after a hard workout or in the summer heat isn’t the smartest thing anyone can do. Water should always be sipped throughout the day and it should never be cold. The best temperature for water is your body temperature or room temperature. Warm water can really boost your energy as it enters your cells quicker than ice-cold water.

Since we “eat” our water, it makes sense to not have it with our meals, doesn’t it? And actually, Ayurveda states that drinking water during meals puts out your Agni - the internal fire of your metabolism. Well, water drinking is restricted during yoga as well for the very same reasons. So, if you want your Agni to be strong and help you purify your body, do not dampen it. Stay away from drinking water during meals and your yoga practice.

Drink your water sitting!

Ayurveda also insists that you drink your water while sitting.

Hey, you at the gym, did you hear? Sit down and have your warm water! Sitting down for the intake of food or drinks actually gives your nervous system time to calm down and switch to the “rest and digest: mode of functioning”. It is also a chance to be more present and aware of what you are doing. In this way you are less likely to take in more than what you need. Enjoying the moment is another bonus.

Final words

Ayurveda is the science of life - literally the wisdom of life. To live our lives healthily, fully and happily all we need is awareness. Through following these simple Ayurvedic guidelines, you will soon connect to your body’s needs. And trust it - it knows just how much and when to drink. If you take a few moments and listen to what your body is telling you, you can never go wrong.
